The Resilient Outdoorsman: Hunting at Any Age

Defy the Years and Embrace the Outdoors

In the world of hunting and outdoor adventure, age is truly just a number. Meet Larry Weishuhn, a wildlife biologist and outdoor writer who has been pursuing his passion for over 70 years – and he’s not slowing down anytime soon.

Weishuhn started hunting before he could even walk, and he’s continued to conquer new challenges well into his 70s. From sheep hunting in the mountains to pursuing European ibex, he’s defied the expectations of what an “older” hunter can accomplish.

Adapting to the Changing Body

As Weishuhn has aged, he’s had to make some concessions, but he’s far from ready to hang up his rifle. Instead, he’s learned to hunt smarter, not faster. He spends more time glassing the terrain, moving slowly, and observing his surroundings. This approach has allowed him to spot more game and take bigger, more mature animals.

“I have become a more patient hunter, willing to sit and watch rather than continually being on the move, and when moving, doing so slower,” Weishuhn explains. “Deer and other game and non-game animals immediately notice quick movements, quicker than they do slow, almost orchestrated movements.”

Embracing the Challenges of Age

Weishuhn’s recent invitation to a moose hunt in British Columbia is a testament to his resilience. Despite informing the outfitter about his age and past injuries, the response was one of understanding and accommodation.

“I wanted him to know upfront before our hunt what he and his guides might be dealing with, rather than getting to camp and then springing some things on them,” Weishuhn said. “Interestingly, he responded that he too was beyond 70 and totally understood.”

Staying Fit and Prepared

To prepare for his upcoming hunts, Weishuhn is committed to a regimen of walking and backpack training. He knows that maintaining his physical fitness is essential to continuing his outdoor pursuits.

“Walking and carrying a backpack has worked better for me than anything else I have tried,” he says. “Over the years I have tried many different methods to get in shape for hunts.”

The Ageless Passion for the Outdoors

Weishuhn’s story is a testament to the power of passion and perseverance. He’s embraced the challenges of age, adapted his hunting strategies, and remained committed to the outdoor lifestyle he loves. His story is an inspiration to hunters and outdoor enthusiasts of all ages, proving that the pursuit of adventure knows no boundaries.
